It's the nationalistic view that obscures reality. From Genesis, we learn how God created languages and halted the monolithic building of the Tower of Babel. Later, Jesus came to a conquered world, from where Christianity spread as a wandering church.
Looking at the world from the perspective of a member of a disappearing nation, nationalism waning, I can see clearly how nationalism can obscure the view of what's really happening.
There are three fundamental groups of people engaged in a religious struggle on all sides of the battle. They are the New, the Orthodox and the Reformed Religions of the world.
These are the three divisions of every religion. In Christianity, they're the Catholic, the Eastern and the Protestant. In Islam, they are the Sunni, the Shi'ah and the Extremist. These three, in every religion, are fighting for supremacy, stating their beliefs in the correctness of their own vision and values.
I can see these three divisions among all nations. They were visible in World War One, World War Two and now in the War on Terror, which is developing to be the Third World War.
The World Wars are fought by the insurgents or the revolutionaries. The New, the Reformed and the Orthodox pull themselves aside and allow the hot-heads among them to lead the charge, but they are nevertheless involved in the struggle. World War One was blamed on the Orthodox, World War Two was blamed on the New and the War on Terror is going to be blamed on the Reformed.
World Wars are fought by nationalistic nations who can't tolerate each other's values. Ultimately, it's the eternal war of good against evil, but the upshot of all wars leads to racism. Racism is only visible when viewed from a non-nationalistic perspective.
