Testament of Matthew

Matthew 20

1. "For the Kingdom of heaven resembles the man who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.
2. "He cut [a deal] with the laborers for the daily dinara, and he sent them to his farm.
3. "And he went out in three hours and saw others who were standing idle at the market place.
4. "And he said to them, 'Go to the farm you too and I will pay your due.'
5. "And they went, and he went out again at six and nine and did likewise.
6. "And for their sake, he went out at the eleventh hour and found others standing idle, and he said to them, 'Why are you standing all day idle?"
7. "And they told him, 'No one* is hiring.' He told them, 'Go to the vineyard you too and you will receive what is due.'
8. "As it was evening, the lord of the vineyard said to his house master, 'Call the laborers and give them their wages.' And he began from the last until the first.
9. "And there came those of the eleventh hour and received each one dinara.*
10. "And as the first ones came, they expected to get more, and they received each one dinara also.
11. "And as they took it, they complained against the owner of the house.
12. "And they said, 'These last ones served one hour and you have made them equal with us who bore the burden of the day and its heat.'
13. "He replied and said to one of them, 'My friend, I am not treating you unfairly.* Did you not cut [a deal] for a dinara with me?
14. " 'Accept yours and go. I wish to pay this last one then like you.
15. " 'Or is it not allowed me to do what I wish with what is mine? Or are you eyeing me disapprovingly since I am good?'*
16. "Thus, the last will be first and the first last, for many are called and few are chosen."
17. However, Jesus was destined to go up to Jerusalem, and he gathered the twelve disciples around himself, and to them only, and he said to them,
18. "Behold, I go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to chief high priests and scribes, and they will find him deserving of death,*
19. "And they will deliver him to the nations and mock him, and torture him and crucify him and on the third day he shall rise."

20. Then the mother of the Zebedee children approached him, together with her sons, and she worshipped him and she had something to ask of him.
21. He told her, "What do you wish?" She told him, "Say that these two sons of mine will sit one from your right and one from your left in your Kingdom."
22. Jesus replied, "You do not know what you are asking for. Can you drink the cup that I am destined to drink? Or be baptized the baptism with which I will be baptized?" They said, "We are."
23. He told them, "My cup you shall drink and the baptism by which I will be baptized, you shall be baptized, however, as for sitting from my right and from my left, it is not mine to give, except for those to whom it was given from my Father."
24. As the ten heard then, they became angry at the two brothers.
25. And Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that the leaders of the nations are their masters and their lords impose their authority over them.
26. "However, let it not be such between you, except whoever among you wishes to be a leader, let him minister to you.
27. "And whoever among you wishes to be first, let him be a servant to you.
28. "Thus the Son of Man did not come to be ministered to, except to minister and give his life in Salvation on behalf of many."

29. And as Jesus left Jericho, there followed him great crowds.
30. And, behold, two blind men sat on the edge of the road, and as they heard that Jesus was passing, they gave voice and said, "Have mercy on us, my Lord, son of David."
31. The crowds, however, yelled at them to be quiet. And they raised their voices even more and said, "Our Lord, have mercy on us, son of David."
32. And Jesus stood and called them and said, "What do you wish I do for you?"
33. They said to him, "Our Lord, so that our eyes may be opened."
34. And Jesus was merciful to them and touched their eyes, and in that very* hour their eyes were opened and they followed him.
