The Testament of John John Eight 1. So Jesus went up to the Mount of Olives; 2. [But] in the morning he came back again to the temple, and all the people came to him, and as he sat down, he taught them. 3*. The scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman who had been caught* with a man. And as they stood them in the arena* [to be stoned,] 4. They said [to Jesus,] "Educator, this woman was literally dragged from the man while fornicating.* 5. "And the Law of Moses commands that such [people] should be stoned. What do you say now*? 6. They attempted to sting him, so that they could find* fault in him. Jesus leaned down as he wrote on the ground. 7. However, as they asked him angrily, he straightened himself up and said, "Whichever one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8. Again as he leaned down, he wrote on the ground. 9. Those that heard [him] took off* one by one, starting with the priests, and left the woman who had come to the arena [completely] alone. 10. Then as Jesus straightened up [again,] he said to the woman, "Where are they [now?] No man* oppresses you [now?]" 11. She then said to him, "Not one!* My Lord!" Then Jesus said, "Neither do I put you down,* go and from now on do not sin again." 12. So [then] Jesus spoke to them again and said, "I am the light of the universe*. Whoever follows me shall not be driven* by the darkness, except [they] shall attain for themselves the light of Life." 13. The Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying on your own behalf, your testimony is not true." 14. Jesus replied and told them, "Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is true, since I know from where I came and where I am going to. But you do not know from where I came and where I am going to. 15. "You judge by physical appearances*, I do not judge the human [being.] 16. "And if I judge, my judgment is just*, since I do not do it by myself, except myself and my Father who sent me. 17. "And in your Law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true. 18. "I am who is testifying about myself, and my Father who sent me testifies about me." 19. They said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus replied and said, "You neither know me, nor my Father; [for] if you know me, you would also know my Father." 20. These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple, and no one* arrested* him. 21. Jesus told them again, "I am going, and you will search for me, [but] you shall die in your sins. And where I go, you cannot go there." 22. The Jews said, "Why, is he going to kill himself, that he says where I go, you cannot come?" 23. He told them, "You are from below, and I am from above. You are from this world*; I am not born of this world*. 24. "I told you that you will die in your sins. [Unless] you believe that I am I, you shall die in your sins." 25. The Jews said, "Who [do you think] you are?!" Jesus told them, "Even though from the beginning I have been telling you [this,] 26. "I [still] have a great [deal] to tell you [in] condemning you; except who sent me is True, and these [things] I have heard from Him, these are the things I speak among the people*." 27. And they did not know that he was telling them about the Father. 28. Jesus told them again, "When you honor* the Son of Man, then you shall observe that I am I, and nothing of my own self I do, except that which was taught me [by] my Father, only of that I speak. 29. "And who sent me is [always] with me, and my Father, since I always* do the thing that glorifies* him." 30. And as he spoke these things, a great many [people] believed in him. 31. And Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you are loyal to my manifestation, you are truly my disciples, 32. "You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free." 33. The [Jews] said to him, "We are the offspring of Abraham, and we never perform work for any human [being.]* How can you say that we shall become free*?" 34. Jesus told them, "Amen, amen, I am telling you, that whoever commits sin is the slave of sin. 35. "And the slave is forever* unable to hold* on to his home, [but] the Son establishes* you till eternity*. 36. "For thus the Son shall make you free, [that] truly you shall be the Sons of the Free. 37. "I know that you are the offspring of Abraham, except you want to have me killed, since you do not accept* my manifestation. 38. "I speak of the thing that I saw with my Father, and you do the thing that [which] you saw with your father." 39. They replied, saying to him, "Our father was Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were the children* of Abraham, you would have performed the work that Abraham did. 40. "But now, behold, you want to have me killed, [me] the man who spoke to you truthfully, that which I heard from God. Abraham would [never] do this! 41. "But you are [the ones] who [indeed] do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one father, God." 42. Jesus told them, "If God was your Father, you would love me, for I have graced you with my Divine presence;* and it was not from my own self that I came, except He sent me. 43. "However, why you do not abide by my manifestation? It is because* of your inability to recognize* [it.] 44. "You come from your father the Devil, and in the service of your father you are content* to be enslaved, [to him] who is the killer of mankind* from the beginning, who never upholds* the truth, for truth does not abide* in him, and when he speaks lies, he speaks of his own genesis, for he is a Liar, [like] his father* also. 45. "But since I speak the truth, you do not believe me. 46. "Which one of you I [led] to sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? 47. "[The one] who comes from God obeys* the words of God; the reason you do not obey, is because you did not come from God." 48. The Jews replied and said to him, "Did we not say [it] beautifully, that you are a Samaritan (and) possessed* by a demon?" 49. Jesus told them, "No demon possesses me, except I honor my Father, and you curse me. 50. "I do not want my glorification. There is One who wants [it for me] and [who] judges. 51. "Amen, amen, I am telling you, whoever guards and obeys my manifestation, shall never see death to [the end of] the universe." 52. The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you are possessed* by a demon. Abraham died and all the prophets. And you say that whoever guards and obeys my manifestation shall not taste death to [the end of] the universe. 53. "Why, are you greater than our father Abraham, who died, and the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?!" 54. Jesus told them, "If I glorify myself, that glorification is of no significance.* It so happens that my Father glorifies me, He whom you call your God. 55. "And you do not know Him; I am the one who knows Him. And if I had said I did not know Him, I would be telling* a lie, just like you. Except I [do] know Him, and I guard and protect His manifestation. 56. "Abraham, your father, was satisfied to see my Day, and he saw [it] and was delighted." 57. The Jews said to him, "But you are not even fifty years [old] and [yet] you have seen Abraham?!" 58. Jesus told them, "Amen, amen, I am telling you, if Abraham had never been born, I am [the One] who Comes [the Omnipresent God]!" 59. And they took up stones to stone him. And Jesus [became] invisible* and emerged out of the temple; and he passed through them and went away. And [the man] went and bathed and came [back] seeing. 8. His neighbors and those who saw him before* said, "Was it not him who used to sit and beg?" 9. There were those that said that it was him, and others that said, "No, except that he looks like him." But he said that, "It is I." 10. They told him, "How were your eyes opened." 11. He replied and told them, "The man, whose name is Jesus, made mud and pressed it over my eyes and told me, 'Go, wash in the waters of apostleship*,' and I went and I washed and I saw." 12. They told him, "Where is he?" He told them, "I do not know." 13. And they brought* [the man] who had been blind before* to the Pharisees. 14. But it was on the Sabbath that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15. And the Pharisees asked him also, "How is it you see?" So he told them, "He consecrated* the mud over my eyes, and I washed and I saw." 16. And some* of the Pharisees said, "This man was not from God thus that he observes not the Sabbath." Others [of them] said, "How can a sinner* perform* miracles [such] as these?" And there was disagreement* between them. 17. They asked again*, "What do you say regarding him who opened your eyes?" He told them, "I say he is a prophet." 18. But the Jews did not believe him, that he was blind and [now] he could see, so then they called the parents of the one who saw; 19. And they asked them, "Is this your son, the one whom you say was born blind? Whom now can see?" 20. But his parents replied and said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind; 21. "However, as for his seeing now and [as for] who opened his eyes, we do not know. Also, [our son] is of age*, ask him. He [can] speak for himself." 22. Thus spoke his parents for they were in submission* to the Jews. For the Jews held* that if anyone* recognized* [Jesus as] the Anointed One, they would throw him out of the Synagogue. 23. That is why his parents said that he was of age, ask him. 24. And they called the man a second time*, the one who had been born* blind, and they told him, "[Give] glory to God; for we are sure that this man is a sinner."* 25. He replied and told them, "If he was a sinner I would not know that. One thing I do know, that I was born blind and behold now I see!" 26. They asked* him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" 27. He told them, "I told you, but you did not listen. Why do you want to hear [it] again? Why, do you also wish* to be his disciples?" 28. But they castigated him and said to him, "You be his disciple! For we are indeed disciples of Moses; 29. "And we know that God spoke to Moses. But [as for] this one, we do not know where he is from!" 30. The man replied and told them, "So this is why you are so confounded*, you do not know whom he really is,* and [yet] he has opened my eyes! 31. "We do know that God does not heed the request* of sinners, except [he heeds] those who surrender* to Him and do His will, to them He listens. 32. "From the beginning of the world* it has never been heard that a man opens the eyes of the born blind. 33. "If he was not from God, he could not do that!" 34. They replied and said to him, "Your entire [being] is born of sin, and [yet] you will teach us?!" And they threw him out. 35. And Jesus heard [of it,] that he was thrown out, and he found him and said to him, "So you do believe in the Son of God?"* 36. Replied the [one whom they] persecuted and said, "Who is it, my Lord, so I may believe in Him!" 37. Jesus told him, "You have seen him, and he who speaks with you happens to be him." 38. Then he said, "I do believe, my Lord!"* And he fell and worshipped him. 39. And Jesus said, "I have come in judgment of these people*, that those who did not see would see, and those that saw would be blinded." 40. And those* Pharisees that were there* heard these [things,] and asked* him, "Why, are we also blind?" 41. Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not be with sin. "I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd consecrates himself in place of his flocks. 12. "For the hired [hand] cannot become a shepherd, and the sheep are not his [sheep.] When he sees the wolf coming, he leaves the flocks and runs away, and the wolf comes, strikes* and scatters the flocks. 13. "The hired [hand] thus runs off, since he was hired and he does not [really] care about the flocks. 14. "[But] I am the good shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me. 15. "Just as my Father knows me and I know my Father, and I consecrate myself in place of the flocks. 16. "And I have also [some] other sheep, those who were not from this sheepfold; they too, it is my duty to bring them, [so they] hear my voice and [so] that all the flocks should be united* and [be with] one shepherd. 17. "Because of this my Father has been merciful to me, so that I may [indeed] consecrate myself and be restored again.* 18. "Nobody* took it* away from me, except it was I who consecrated it out of my own willingness*. For it was nobody else but me that consecrated it, and nobody else but me who shall restore it again; [for] this is the commandment I received from my Father." 19. And there was again division among the Jews because of these words. 20. And many of them said that, "He is possessed* and [carries on like] a lunatic*. Why do you listen to him?" 21. There were others who said, "These are not the words of a lunatic. Why, can a demon open the eyes of the blind!" 22. There came the feast of Dedication* in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23. And Jesus walked in Solomon's portico. 24. And the Jews went around and said to him, "When will you come and instill [peace] among us?* If you are the Anointed One, tell us openly*." 25. Jesus replied and told them, " I told you, but* you did not believe. And the works that I did in the name of my Father, these testify on my behalf. 26. "But you, you do not believe, since you are not of my sheep, so that I may tell you. 27. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28. "And I give them Life to [the end of] the universe, and they shall never go to eternal* oblivion, and no one* can wrest* them from my hand. 29. "For the Father who gave [them] to me is Omnipotent*, and no one* can wrest [anything] from my Father's hand. 30. "My Father and I are One." 31. Again the Jews took up stones to stone him. 32. Jesus told them, "I have showed you many beautiful works from my Father. Because of these works you want to stone me?" 33. The Jews said to him, "Not because of beautiful works we [want to] stone you, except for your blaspheming and as we know you [to be only] human. [Yet] you make yourself out to be God!" 34. Jesus told them, "Was it not thus written in your Law, 'That though I say you are gods'? 35. "If God said thus of them, for [indeed] God's manifestation was among them, and no Book can defy that. 36. "The one whom the Father consecrates and sends to the world* you tell that, 'You are blaspheming'! [When*] I told you that I am the Son of God! 37. "And if I did not do the works of my Father, you do not have to believe me. 38. "But if I do these, even if you do not believe in me, [then] believe in the works, so that you may know and believe that my Father [abides] in me and I in my Father." 39. And they wanted to stone him again, and he escaped* from them*, 40. And he went to the Jordan [river] crossing, to the place where John [the Baptist] had been before*, where he used to baptize, and he remained there. 41. And the two sisters sent for Jesus and said, "Our Lord, behold, the one to whom you have [shown your] mercy is ill.* 4. Jesus then said, "This illness is not deadly*, except for the sake of God's glory, through which the Son of God shall be glorified." 5. Now Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus. 6. And he heard [Lazarus] was sick, he [sat] tight where he was for a couple of days. 7. After that he said to his disciples, "Come, let us go again to Judea." 8. His disciples told him, "[Our] Lord, the Jews were just [recently] trying to stone you, and you want to go there now?" 9. Jesus told them, "Are not there twelve hours in a day? And if human beings* wander in day [time,] they will not lose their way, since they see the Light of the universe here. 10. "And if [they] wander at night now, they will be lost, since the Light is not in them." 11. These [things] Jesus told them, and later he explained*. "Lazarus lies in our care.* Except I should go so* they can show him [to me.]" 12 His disciples told him, "[Our] Lord, if he sleeps, he will be restored*." 13. But Jesus said it about his death, and they expected [that] it was about restful sleep* that he spoke of. 14. Jesus told them, "Plainly [speaking,] Lazarus is dead. 15. "And I am glad that I was not there, since you will not believe unless you went there [yourselves.]*" 16. Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his disciple friends, "Let us also go and die with [Lazarus]!" 17. And Jesus came to Bethany and found out that [Lazarus] had been in the grave four days [already.] 18. It [so] happened Bethany was on the side of Jerusalem, away* from it [by] about fifteen furloughs. 19. And many Jews* came to Martha and Mary, who sorrowed* in their hearts because of their brother. 20. But as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she rushed to meet him.* Mary [though] stayed home. 21. And Martha said to Jesus, "My Lord, if you had come to us, my brother would not have died. 22. "Even though I know that even now however much you ask of God, He shall give you." 23. Jesus told her, "Your brother shall rise." 24. Martha told him, "I know that he shall rise in the resurrection of the last days.*" 25. Jesus told her, "I am the Resurrection and the Life, and whoever believes in me, even though they be dead, shall Live, 26. "And whoever that Lives and believes in me, shall never die*. Do you believe this?" 27. She told him, "Yes, that I do, my Lord! I do* believe, that you are the Anointed Son of God Who Comes to the universe!" 28. And as she said these [things,] she went and called Mary, her sister, secretly, and told her, "Our Lord has come and calls you." 29. And as Mary heard [that,] she rose quickly and came to [Jesus.] 30. Although Jesus had not yet gone to the village, except he was in the same place where Martha saw him. 31. Also those Jews that were with [Mary] in the house, who loved her, [when] they saw that Mary got up quickly and left, they followed her, expecting that she was [most likely*] going to the grave to cry. 32. But when Mary arrived where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and told him, "If you had been with us, my Lord, my brother would not have died." 33. But as Jesus saw her crying and the Jews that came with her crying, he felt profound tenderness* and compassion*. 34. And he said, "Where have you placed* him?" And they told him, "Our Lord, come and see!" 35. And it brought tears to Jesus' eyes.* 36. And the Jews said, "Look, how much mercy he felt* for him!" 37. The people* said, "Could he not, he who opened the eyes of the blind, also do [something] so that [Lazarus*] would not die?" 38. But as Jesus was moved by them*, he came to the grave* [site] where there was a cave, and the stone was placed on its entrance.* 39. If you are sympathetic* to me, you would be happy that I was going to my Father, that my Father was my Father.* 29. "And now I am telling you before it happens,* so that whatever happens, you may believe. 30. "From now on I will not speak with you at length*. For the leader of the world* is coming, and he has nothing to do with me.* 31.
